Hello Summer Playlist

I decided to make a new summer playlist.  For some reason one day I decided I just had altogether too many playlists and started deleting them! Why did I do that?  Now, of course, I miss my deleted playlists.  Who cares if I have dozens of playlists?  So I asked for suggestions from friends.  I always discover a few cool new songs that way.  I also discover some not awesome to my ears songs.  I need to tweak it a bit.  I try to listen to songs a few times before I decide its gone forever.  Sometimes one listen is enough to know that I never want to subject my ears to that trauma again. 

Hello Summer Playlist

I have above attempted to copy my embed code for my spotify playlist into this post.  Will it work?  I have  no idea until I try to post this.  I'm having my doubts since my Blogger seems to be having issues and my publish button is greyed out.  Dang it!

So I shall continue to ramble.  Somehow I seem to have gotten a plus one on this post before I have posted it.  My talents amaze even me at times.  So NPR posted a list of summer songs that just listed the top Billboard songs from summers past.  My summer songs are more about a mood than a release date. 

Here are a few videos.  I try to pick the less mainstream ones that not everyone might have heard.

 

 

 

Bleachers - Roller Coaster.  Audio only but happy, catchy roller coaster song.  It makes my ears happy. 

 

 

 



 

 

Best Coast - The Only Place.  This song makes me want to be driving a convertible down the pacific coast highway.  The fact I've never been to California doesn't change this fact at all.

The Drifters - Under the Boardwalk.  I don't think this song will ever get old.  I feel perfect happiness when I hear this song.  If I were Angel, I would lose my soul.

 

 

 

I have such love for Kopecky Family Band.  This is called Heartbeat and it's more about mood than a traditional summer song but I heart it.  When I see them I like to figure out how I could join the band.  I see some guy jumping around with a tambourine and I think I could TOTALLY replace jumping around with a tambourine guy.  Then they play another song and he's playing the CELLO!  I could not ever play the cello so jumping around tambourine guy is safe from my evil plans to replace him.

What makes a great cover?

 

 

 

My guy is on my Spotify account so being the super, sweet woman that I am I decided to listen to some tunes on Youtube.  I then discovered this fabulous cover of Kopecky Family Band playing "All You Do Is Talk"  by another one of my favorite bands BRMC.  Such awesomeness.  I would now like all my favorite bands to cover each other because it makes me so happy.  I really can't even remember if I wrote a post on covers but oh well if I did here's another one. 

 

So there was a time when I really didn't like covers at all.  I thought everyone should play their own music but then I heard some covers that blew me away.  Covers that change the mood, the tempo, the style, the feel of the song.  Some that were better than the original.  So now I'm a fan of covers though it's still embarrassing when I love a cover and DON'T EVEN KNOW IT'S A COVER.  Then I just have to pretend I knew but I feel like an idiot.  Oh well, it's still great to discover new and fabulous music even if you look stupid in the process.  Such as when KFB covered "Tusk" by Fleetwood Mac at their show but I didn't know that until my friend told me.  KFB did a fabulous job on that cover and of course I had to go and listen to the original.

Okay the my favorite version of Lay Lady Lay by Magnet and Gemma Hayes covering Bob Dylan.  I love the song but hate the video.  I suggest you listen to it with your eyes closed. 

 

 

 

Here is Glen Phillips covering Huey Lewis and the News "I Want a New Drug".  Unique cover.  Glen is the singer for Toad the Wet Sprocket.  Grrr that one won't load either but look it up and listen to it.

My love letter to Kopecky Family Band

I can't remember when I first heard Kopecky Family Band but I know I loved them from my first listen.  It's so great discovering a band that makes the music that warms your soul.  I love their harmonies, hand clapping, whistling, horns, strings.  They are really very talented musicians.  They have a great energy and put on an awesome live show.  Catch them if you can.  I guarantee it will be a fun night.  I wanted to get a pic with Kelsey and Gabe when I saw them at Live Oak but wussed out on asking them.  Next time, I'll be brave. 

They only have one full album at this time, Kids Raising Kids, and they just had their first tonight show performance.  Now if only they would play this on the radio.   This is why I'm so thankful for the internet because I can discover music that I never hear on mainstream radio and then I can be excited when they do find success.
