SOTD - Unbelievers by Vampire Weekend

Song of the Day - Unbelievers by Vampire Weekend.  Vampire Weekend has been the soundtrack of my dreams lately.  The have definitely left their mark on my subconscious.  This is their live performance from SNL.  Pretty dang awesome.  They will be coming to DFW on 10/10/13 but I will most likely not be there. Unless someone surprises me with a ticket.  I think I'll enter the KXT 3 song set list contest to try to win tickets.  Have an awesome day friends!  Enjoy the tune!

Linky Love

From the New Yorker - "How Music Makes Us Feel Better"

Music has now been used therapeutically for a number of diseases, including dementia, schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and cerebral ischemia. In a study of chronic pain sufferers, researchers at the Cleveland Clinic found that listening to music helped patients experience less physical pain, as well as lower rates of depression; in a study of older people with dementia, scientists from the National Taipei College of Nursing found that playing background music during lunch significantly lowered both verbal and physical aggression. In 2006, researchers discovered that even something as complex as open-heart surgery could be improved with a musical intervention: patients who listened to music during and after heart surgery not only felt less anxious but required, on average, two hundred fewer minutes of intubation than those who had undergone standard procedure.

Still Awesome! - Blondie - One Way or Another

Isn't it funny how some songs stand up ten, twenty, thirty years later and some songs seem dated in no time at all.  My new feature will be Still Awesome!  I will share some of the still awesome songs.

Blondie singing One Way or Another  - a song that will always be awesome

My imaginary walk on songs

So I'm at the Rangers game last night and I start thinking what songs I would have as walk on songs if I were a Texas Ranger.  Admittedly, I will never be a Texas Ranger.  I played softball because my friends co-ed team needed more females.  That is pretty much all I brought was my femaleness to the game.  I felt like I hit a home run if my bat made contact with the ball.  Foul ball - didn't matter.  Easily caught pop up - still didn't matter.  My bat hit the ball, therefore I am awesome. lol.

So what makes a great walk up song.  It has to get you pumped and the crowd pumped.  It has to start strong because you don't get too hear too much before you're at bat.

Howlin for you by Black Keys - That will definitely work.

I have to have some BRMC.  I've decided on Spread your Love just because it has such a strong recognizable opening.

Juicebox by the Strokes

Bring It by Trapt - awesomeness for a walk on song

Japandroids - The House that Heaven Built

So while I'm at this I would also like to make a playlist for the fireworks show too.  Really, Rangers, I love you but Ghostbusters?  You can do so much better than that.  I would like to create a job for myself that shall have the title Person in charge of Awesome Music at Rangers games.  Some little perks I would add to my million dollar contract would be that I get to sit next to Nolan Ryan at all games, rub Yu's shoulders before he takes the field and get to kiss Ian on the lips whenever I feel like it.  Yes, I have a rich fantasy life.

My newest band crush - Elephant Revival

You know you hear a new song by a new band and its instant love.  Just everything you appreciate, strings, male female harmonies, bluegrass, Americana, This is me and Elephant Revival today.  I listened to one song then another and another and another and I can't get enough of them.  My ears are happy and BONUS they are coming to Live Oak in October.  So I say I can't see every band I love.  I think I will have to find a way.  It's kismet me finding them the month before they play here.  I adore musicians that radiate joy when they play.

Hayes Carll at Billy Bob's Texas!

You either love Hayes Carll or you're wrong!!! Really I don't understand how people don't love him and his music.  Hayes is a Texas singer songwriter.  The first few times I've seen him were not the best.  I saw him at the 2011 Fort Worth Music Festival in the rain and I didn't get to see a whole set.  I really wasn't very familiar with him and his music but I did like his storytelling to the audience.  The next time I saw him was at KXT's Summer Cut with a much too short 30 minute set.  I was glad to finally see him in a smaller club setting where he was the featured performer.  He did not pack the place but the fans who were there were very dedicated fans.  They knew the songs.  They sang along.  They hooped and hollered.  Hayes says as long as people keep showing up he will keep performing I hope that's true.  I was disappointed that I didn't get to hear She Left Me for Jesus or Someone Like You.  I love both those songs.  I really would like to be able to provide a set list to the artist before the shows. :)  Even better I could have sang Someone Like You with Hayes.  That really would have been a fun audience sing a long.  My favorite songs were Hard Out Here and Stomp and Holler.  I really enjoy the more upbeat songs at a show.  I wanted a t shirt but I tell  myself that my splurge is for the tickets and the experience not the t shirt.

Here's the set list

Girl Downtown
I Got A Gig

Seryn at Levitt Pavillion

Seryn is a band out of Denton, Texas that I discovered two years ago.  Their music just makes me happy.  It can be both uplifting and chill.  I've been wanting to catch them forever it seems but I finally go to see them Friday night at Levitt Pavillion in Arlington.  They put on a great show.  I love the musicianship.  They are multi instrumentalists, have a great sound and a high energy singer.  I don't know how to describe this band.  I'll go with indie folk.  Give them a listen and catch a show if you get a chance.  I believe they are at work on their second album.  They have a new song, Ivory Black out but I couldn't get it to load.

This is my favorite Seryn song  "We Will All Be Changed"

MS MR Hurricane

MS MR -  I don't know much about them but I love, love, love this song.

The fabulous Neko Case....

Neko Case has a new album out today which is fabulous but has a too long title.  Here goes, I'm taking a deep breath first...The Worse Things Get The Harder I Try, The Harder I Try the More I Love You.  She is a wonderful singer songwriter.  We'll call her alt country.  I hate putting labels on music.  Music falls in two categories for me Music I love and Not so much.   Give her a listen.

This first song is called "Night Still Comes".

This song is called "Man".
